How Birmingham Businesses Can Use
Good Web Design to Establish Credibility and Reputation

Good Web Design Leaves a Positive Impression on Prospective Customers

web design first handshake with Birmingham customers

It is fast becoming the rule rather than the exception that a Birmingham business' credibility and reputation is shaped by its online presence – which is usually represented by the company's website.  The reason for this is simple.  The Internet is where more and more consumers are getting their information.  A company's website is often the place where visitors' first impressions about a company are formed and where the first (virtual) handshake takes places with prospective customers.  What happens after that depends on how well the website delivers relevant, valuable information to the visitor..

Good Web Design Puts Your Business on the Customer's "Short List"

When people hear about an interesting company in Birmingham or a new product they often visit the company's website at their first opportunity – sometimes immediately if an iPhone or other web-enabled smartphone is close by.  The quality of the website's design suddenly becomes a critical factor in determining whether your company gets on a buyer's "short list" of potential providers of products or services.

  1. What are your business goals?
Is your goal is to grow your business by 20% next year?  Or increase customer loyalty by 40%?  Or simply to educate the public about your company or organization?

  2. What are your online marketing objectives?
A good website objective might be to dominate online searches in your local market for 10 major keywords.  Or achieve an organic (natural) first-page search ranking on Google for 3 critical keywords.

  3.

Good Web Design Tells Visitors You're Serious About Serving Them

A poorly designed site that's difficult to read, has too few pictures to illustrate important points, takes too long to load, or has confusing navigation (menu system) tells visitors you're not really serious about communicating with them online

Good Web Design Offers Reassurance to Online Visitors

Good web design, on the other hand, offers reassurance to visitors that a company is capable of delivering valuable information to them quickly, efficiently, and reliably.  Credibility is enhanced, a good reputation is cultivated, and traffic steadily builds on the website.

Seven Ways That Good Web Design Can Be Used to
Make a Good First Impression

1.  Make the Website So Easy to Navigate
"Even a Caveman Can Do It"

Web design no room for errorsPeople won't use a website if they can't find their way around it.  Menus should be where users expect them to be – and on every page.  Across the top (or just below the main graphic) or down the left side of the page.  A text link menu should also appear at the bottom of every page.  A good web designer will not force a visitor to hunt for the navigation menu.

Links, whether they are used in menu systems or as links to related information elsewhere, should always be descriptive.  Good website design that includes descriptive links adds credibility to the site by giving the user confidence that he or she is going in the right direction in the search for information on the site.  Ultimately, the number of clicks to find information is not as important as whether the user feels comfortable that he or she will eventually be rewarded with the right information.

2.  Provide Useful, Valuable Information That Would Impress
     Even You

web design should not stand along in onlin marketing strategyThe #1 problem with most poorly designed websites is the crappy (and often stolen) information that makes it's way to the page. Visitors are looking for interesting, high quality information about a company or a product – not the usual blah-blah-blah about how great the company happens to be.

Good web design omits needless words that only increase the site's “noise level”. By ruthlessly culling out unnecessary words the web designer enhances the prominence of more useful content on the site. Pages are made shorter and easier to read with a minimum of scrolling down to see all the content.

3. Deliver Information That's Free of Errors

web design should have errorsSpelling or obvious grammatical errors on a web page are like a mustard stain on a man's tie. Everyone will see it.  Even worse, it makes your business appear as though it pays no attention to detail and doesn't care if you like it or not.

4.  Include Examples of Your Company's Work -- and How Long You've Been Doing It

good website design should consider usabilityWebsite visitors want to know what you've done for other customers or clients.  Don't hide good work that will reassure prospective customers of your company's expertise or talent.

Most businesses fail within the first five years.  So, if your company has been around for more than five years you should not keep that a secret. Telling website visitors how long you've been in business goes a long way in establishing credibility and staying power.  Our company has been in operation for 20 years and you can bet we crow about it – especially since many of our competitors have come and gone during that time.

5.  Prominently Display Phone Numbers

always include phone number on websiteOur company's policy is to try to include a phone number at the top of every page.  Don't make visitors search endlessly for your phone number because most won't – they'll just click away to a competitor's website.  If your goal is to encourage visitors to call for more information (or to place an order!) make it easy for them.

Often we include an element on the home page commonly referred to as a "click-to-call" button. This is a button that the visitor can click, enter his or her phone number in a pop-up window, and then be instantly connected by phone with a representative from the website.  This eliminates the need for the user to manually dial a phone number to reach the company represented on the website.

6.  Keep Content Fresh and Interesting

fresh interesting website contentVisitors should be given a reason to return to a site – often. The best way to do this is to constantly deliver new, fresh content that visitors will perceive as valuable. Don't make the mistake of having a site built and then forgetting about it.  Click here for more information about the importance of maintaining fresh website content to improve search marketing results.

7.  Tell Visitors What To Do

lead website visitorsYes, you read it right! Good web design subtly guides visitors in the direction that the web designer wants them to go. The designer's objective may be to lead the visitor to make a purchase, fill out a web form, sign-up for a subscription, view an informative video, or download a brochure or report. In any event, visitors should not be left to their own imagination about what to do next when they land on a company's home page. Good website design carefully tells visitors what to do in order to complete a desired task.

How Good Web Design Affects Google Adwords
(Pay-Per-Click) Advertising Performance

The Relationship Between Good Web Design and Google Adwords Performance

Our company often gets calls from prospective clients who tell us they have had very poor experiences with pay-per-click (PPC) advertising programs such as Google Adwords.  Those with the most painful experiences don't even want to talk about the hundreds, even thousands of dollars they've poured into Google's bank account.

What these prospective clients don't know is why their PPC ad campaigns were so costly and ineffective at driving traffic to their websites.  In many cases it only takes one visit to a client's website for us to understand why the business failed to generate a positive return on their PPC advertising investment.

Poor Google Ad Performance Not What It Appears

One reason why PPC ad campaigns appear to fail is because many clients (as well as many web designers) do not understand the direct relationship between the effectiveness of Google Adwords and the quality of the web design at the company's website.  Since most all forms of online advertising are focused on driving traffic to a company's website it is there that revenue-generating actions take place.

The Purpose of Good Web Design in Relation to Google

The purpose of good web design is to lead visitors to perform desired actions that generate revenue for the client. If the website fails to do this even after the client has paid Google for the traffic then it's easy to blame Google Adwords for the poor performance.  The statistics generated by Adwords for a campaign, however, may tell a different story.  More often than not, we are able to pin-point the weak link in the online advertising strategy as being the lack of good web design.  Continue >>

Rule #1:Get Noticed Online
What do you have to do to get your website noticed by potential customers? Easy! Just listen.

Rule #2:Get Noticed, Then Attract
It's one thing for your site to get noticed, but it's another thing to attract visitors to your website as opposed to repelling them with a poor first impression online.

Rule #3:Attract, Then Engage
You've attracted lots of visitors to your site.  But now you have to "engage" them in an online conversation that makes them feel comfortable about doing business with you.

Rule #4: Engage, Then Convert
Once you've engaged your online visitor it's time to start converting them into "paying customers". Knowing how to do this subtly, but in a measurable way that leads to a sale requires skilled marketing.

How to Avoid Wasting Your Money on a New Website

The "Online Marketing Facts of Life"

There is a virtual graveyard on the Internet where poorly-funded and poorly-designed websites go to die a slow death.  They are all alone and no one visits them.  Many of these websites are owned by Birmingham businesses that were sold on the promise of online success for the "low, low price of only $199.00" -- or some other equally unreasonable claim.

Truth is, online success at a bargain basement price may have been possible ten years ago, but it definitely is not the case today.  The competition is greater, the rewards are MUCH higher, and the technology behind a successful online marketing strategy is vastly more sophisticated.

How Much Should You Invest in Good Website Design

So what is success really worth to you?

A Birmingham company's marketing message gets communicated in many different ways.  In order to succeed in today's marketplace companies must invest well to communicate their sales messages online via good website design.  More specifically, they must communicate that message online in the most professional manner possible and in a way that emphasizes measurable outcomes.

But how can a company determine how much to invest in good website design?  Continue>>

Why the "Call to Action" Is An Essential Element of Good Website Design

How to Engage the User, Increase Sales, and Increase Customer Loyalty

Good website design should ALWAYS include multiple "Calls to Action" -- especially on the site's home page.  This is because online visitors should NEVER be allowed to wander aimlessly around a site -- usually never taking a desired action (e.g. making a purchase, calling for more information, filling out a web form, dowloading an informative video, etc.). Instead, a "Call to Action" should be present to subtly guide the user to take such actions.  Continue>>

How Your Company Can Get More Business Online With Good Web Design

The secret can be boiled down to three words: Search Engine Marketing

Everyone knows that more consumers than ever are using the Internet to find products and services that you sell.  In fact, even economic recessions can't dampen consumer behavior when it comes to going online to either research purchases before buying in-store or actually placing orders online.  Paypal, an ecommerce services provider, expects its revenue from ecommerce sales to double by the end of 2011 (USA Today, 12/15/2009).  Therefore, the growth of consumer engagement with the Internet makes it more important than ever for businesses to invest in good web design to maximize their search visibility online.
